Arizona high schoolers got a taste of real-world public safety work in Phoenix thanks to the AZDPS S.T.A.R. program. The inaugural event, which ran from March 20-22, introduced ten students from across the state to practical aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) used in public safety careers.

Developed by the AZDPS Technical Services Division, the STEM Training & Application in Real World Public Safety program catered to 16 to 18-year-olds keen on professional growth in the field. The program packed a punch, featuring an array of demonstrations and hands-on activities, including traffic stops, aviation operations and a not-so-typical IT overview which included a delve into cybersecurity.

As reported by AZDPS, students also watched SWAT operations and learned about motorcycle troopers, collision investigations, and crime scene processing. It wasn't all observation, though. These teens got a chance to get their hands dirty with fingerprinting, coding workshops, crash reconstruction, and mock crime scenes, gaining invaluable insight into the nuts and bolts of law enforcement.

The event culminated on March 22 with participants receiving certificates of completion. It was more than just a pat on the back – it was recognition of their potential to contribute to public safety in the future. Praising the program's success, the AZDPS highlighted its significance in creating educational opportunities that blend STEM with the practicalities of keeping our communities safe.

For Arizona teens dreaming of a career in public safety, or for those interested simply in the workings of the field, this immersive experience provided a behind-the-scenes look at the intersection of theory and practice. The AZDPS is ensuring that the yawn-wide gap between classroom learning and hands-on application is bridged, preparing the next generation for a career in protecting the Grand Canyon State.
