A Port St. Lucie teacher's life was tragically cut short in a brutish act of violence, a murder-suicide at the hands of her estranged husband who later turned the gun on himself, all this taking place in the grim setting of a motel parking lot in West Palm Beach, as reported by WPTV.
Authorities identified the woman as Jamie Felix, 45, an algebra teacher at Manatee Academy K-8 School, and her estranged husband as Ray Felix, 60; the ordeal unfolded on Friday night, with Jamie being forced at gunpoint to write a troubling email to her coworkers before she was killed, the sinister plot leading up to her death began earlier that day when Ray, in disguise, coerced her and their two children into his rental car, after which he drove them to a business to collect Jamie's car, which led them to the fatal parking lot encounter the car, two boys in tow, was discovered on Belvedere Road, near the site where Jamie's body was found, according to investigating authorities from the Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach police departments, the grisly discovery punctuated by the stark contrast of the masterful mathematics Jamie once harmonized to the foreboding arithmetic of estrangement and violence.
The children, boys aged 10 and 17, were present during this harrowing sequence of events but remained physically unharmed; Ray Felix, after the fatal shooting, proceeded to a nearby rental car facility where, when approached by officers from the West Palm Beach Police, he inflicted a fatal gunshot wound upon himself, his own life ending not long after his wife's, "There was no exchange of gunfire," spokesman Mike Jachles disclosed in the chaotic aftermath, as shared by CBS12.
In the wake of these chilling events, the St. Lucie School District expressed its heartfelt sorrow and extended the promise of support and grief counseling services "for as long as needed," lamenting the loss of a woman who brought "joy, passion and dedication" to her students, Jamie's impact couched in the warm remembrances of those who knew her best, her untimely departure from the world a stark void in the tapestry of lives she touched, the school district's spokesperson communicated the collective mourning, and while some members of the community expressed fear and bewilderment, surprise at the severe unraveling of what should have been a sanctuary of family and love was apparent, people like Norberto Contreras, a motel guest, conveyed his distress to WPTV saying, "What were they going through? What was happening? What would drive somebody to do something like that? It's awful."
