Portland's picturesque docks have recently become the lounging area for a host of unexpected visitors. A colony of sea lions has decided to make the Columbia River near Hayden Island their new chill spot, occupying docks with their hefty presence. In what has become a wildlife spectacle, these aquatic mammals have been spotted near the Interstate Bridge, as captured in a video by KATU photojournalist Mike Warner.
According to local eyewitnesses, this is not a one-day affair. "They were around most of last week," a woman told Warner, indicating that the sea lions have found a comfort zone along the riverbanks. However, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife isn't surprised by these visitors. They've told WLOS that sea lions making themselves at home in the region is "a pretty normal occurrence this time of year."
The reason behind their arrival? Food, plain and simple. The sea lions are tracking down an abundant food source — smelt — swimming up the river. The river seems to be offering a bountiful feast, setting up a temporary buffet for the hungry pinnipeds.
Residents and tourists alike may wonder how long this unexpected occupation will last. The Department of Fish and Wildlife suggests there's an end in sight. Once the smelt begins to dwindle, the sea lions are expected to pack up their aquatic caravan and head back down the estuary, as highlighted in a WPDE report. Until then, the docks shall remain the prime real estate for these sizable sea mammals, enjoying the river's bounty and perhaps, the adoration of human onlookers.
