Portland's athletes are going to have to put their games on hold for a bit. Due to what seems like an endless deluge, the city's Parks & Recreation Department has put the kibosh on all grass sports and athletic fields across Portland. With the soggy conditions threatening to ruin the fields, the department had little choice but to tell everyone to stay off the green until further notice. The closure includes popular sports like soccer, rugby, and lacrosse, among others.
In an effort to not too badly disrupt the spring sports that are just revving up, Portland Parks & Recreation is scrambling to find every available synthetic field for games, but let's just say it's going to be snug. As reported by the official Portland Parks & Recreation announcement, the bureau remains hopeful that it won't be more than a few weeks before the fields can again host the city's athletes safely. Don't worry about practices either, as PP&R plans to prioritize games during the closure period because of the limited availability of all-weather fields.
While the synthetic fields can handle the wet conditions without looking like a mud wrestling match, they're not exactly growing on trees across Portland. This means that scheduling could become the next competitive sport in the city, as teams vie for a spot on those precious all-weather turfs. The city's Parks & Recreation department will be constantly monitoring the grass fields like hawks, hoping for an opening that will let the athletes go back to playing on nature's carpet.
So, what's the plan? Teams and leagues will have to adapt for now. They'll regroup, strategize, and adjust to using alternative synthetic fields, which are still open. Portland's sports community is quickly learning to improvise with this unexpected challenge. With the sports calendar disrupted, they have to pivot swiftly. Monitoring for potential reopening dates of the fields is ongoing.
