Portland has officially struck gold, nabbing one of seven gold medals awarded nationwide by CityHealth for its robust efforts to tackle public health concerns and advance health equity. After a steady climb from bronze to silver in 2022, the city has reached the peak of the podium, recognized for pushing the envelope with policies particularly benefitting its underserved populations.
A significant move that contributed to the accolade was the December 2022 decision, made by the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, to check the sale of flavored tobacco products. According to the Multnomah County website, this restriction plays a pivotal role in the city's upgraded ranking.
With an ongoing CityHealth initiative on their minds, County health officials gathered earlier this week to shed light on how such policies are making a real difference. Multnomah County Health Department Director Rachael Banks and Kaiser Permanente's Government Relations Director for the Northwest Region, Elizabeth Edwards, briefed the Board of County Commissioners. They detailed how the initiative's framework has guided Portland's course towards a healthier, more equitable community.
