A Savoy, Illinois man, identified as David Berry of the 800 block of Hartwell, has been handed a 15-year prison sentence for the sexual exploitation of a minor. The U.S. Department of Justice detailed Berry's sentencing to include a supervised release term for five years following his prison term and mandated sex offender registration.
Evidence presented at Berry's sentencing revealed an incident from October of 2021, where the minor was brought to his home, sexually assaulted and videographed while engaging in the criminal acts. Running rampant through the legal system, the case that ended with Berry's conviction, iling put a spotlight on the predatory nature lurking in the underbelly of seemingly safe communities.
U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mihm underscored the long-lasting trauma Berry is responsible for, ordering him to pay restitution amounting to $6,140 to the victim. Berry entered a guilty plea in September of 2023, following his indictment by the U.S. Attorney's Office in February of 2022.
The Savoy man could have faced 15 to 30 years behind bars, but received the lower end of the statutory penalties for his crime. As part of an extensive investigation, his capture was facilitated by multiple law enforcement arms including U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security Investigations and local police departments. Left in the wake of his sentencing is the vigilant effort by Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative that played a key role in bringing Berry to justice.
Project Safe Childhood's integral part in the case comes as a shout to marshal forces across federal, state, and local levels to combat internet-based exploitation of juveniles. More information on the initiative can be found at their official website. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon O’Brien led the government's prosecution efforts, representing an ongoing battle against those who prey on the innocence of children.
