Scottsdale, Arizona, has netted a top environmental honor for its recently renovated Civic Center, with Arizona Forward bestowing the Crescordia award upon the city project. Defined by its Greek roots as "growing in harmony," the Crescordia is the pinnacle recognition within the Environmental Excellence Awards, and Scottsdale's Civic Center has notably gotten the nod in the “Civic Buildings, Structures, and Landscape Design” category, as reported by the city's own news publication.
The Mayor of Scottsdale, David D. Ortega, expressed his pride in the revamp, stating, "Our spectacular, reborn Civic Center campus debuts three outdoor stages, more than 100 new trees, reduced turf areas, which save millions of gallons of water a year; and wide promenades, which link Scottsdale Stadium, Civic Center Library, City Hall, Scottsdale Center for the Arts and historic Old Town." Clearly aiming to seamlessly integrate the areas of recreation and ecological mindfulness, the renovation was an extensive undertaking, starting back in October 2021 and finally unveiling in 2023.
With a focus on sustainability, the Civic Center's overhaul included the addition of planted bioswales to capture stormwater, permeable pavements, and targeted roof water collection systems designed to supplement treasured trees. These enhancements are expected to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of the civic space while providing the community and its visitors with a resplendent backdrop for events and relaxation alike.
