The search for 15-year-old Sebastian Rogers, who has been missing since February 26 and suffers from autism, took a grim turn as volunteers were forced to halt their efforts due to chilling death threats. The United Cajun Navy (UCN), a well-known volunteer rescue organization, had gathered about 50 individuals ready to scour the area off Volunteer Drive in Hendersonville when they hit an unexpected and unnerving roadblock. "It’s almost innumerable," Kevin LaFond, associated with the UCN, explained the number of threats they received in an interview with WSMV4
These threats, both online and in person, caused the UCN to halt its mission just as it was about to commence. According to the organization, the severity of the threats was such that it led to "increasing security concerns," a reason echoed across multiple reports. "This decision was not taken lightly, and is made with the safety of all volunteers in mind," UCN shared in a statement obtained by WCAX. The group added, "We are very grateful," showing appreciation for the would-be participants.
The United Cajun Navy's proactive approach in the past transitioned swiftly from one case to another, which LaFond suggested may have been a factor in the threats. Transitioning from the search for University of Missouri student Riley Strain to Sebastian Rogers marked a stark contrast in the chain of events. "It’s 180 degrees different than our search for Riley Strain," LaFond told WSMV4.
Despite the alarming setback, the hunt for Sebastian Rogers is not abandoned, according to UCN. They plan to reevaluate the circumstances and continue support for ongoing efforts. "This does not mean the search is over," the volunteer group insisted in a report by WBIR. The existing concern now is not just about finding a teenage boy who left without a trace, but also ensuring that those who offer their hearts and hands to bring him home do not become collateral damage in a world fraught with inexplicable hostility.
