According to Eater Chicago, the Humboldt Park border now sings with the scent of freshly baked bagels and babka as Steingold's Bakehouse opens its doors at 2939 W. Grand Avenue.
The low-key launch meant little buzz outside an Instagram post, but that didn't stop a hungry crowd from descending on the bakery for their fix of deli delights, from lox and schmear to hot challah buns stuffed with pastrami, egg, and cheese, they've been serving up a storm ever since. Owner Aaron Steingold told Block Club Chicago, "We’re excited to be open in the neighborhood and have a lot of friends that live there," expressing his enthusiasm for the new venture in the diverse and vibrant community.
While currently dishing out only prepared-ahead items like deli containers of schmaltzy potato salad and grab-and-go corned beef, plans are brewing for made-to-order offerings shortly, In a statement obtained by Eater Chicago, there won't be any indoor seating but expect a few picnic tables in the parking lot come warmer weekends; this plan, backed by the landlord, is still working out the kinks. Beyond the bakehouse, Steingold's is prepping to hit a home run with a new spot in Wrigleyville, a partnership that will bring about fresh flavors as everything bagel-dogs on a stick and latke-tot poutine.
