A road rage incident in Golden Beach has led to the arrest of a Sunny Isles Beach man for pointing a gun at another motorist. Matthew Antonio Cortez, 34, faces a felony charge of aggravated assault with a firearm following the heated exchange that occurred on March 4, according to Golden Beach police.
Details from the arrest report, as obtained by Local 10, indicate that Cortez was allegedly riding shotgun with a woman he was dating when he brandished the weapon at the occupants of another vehicle just before 1:40 p.m. on the 200 block of Ocean Boulevard. The pair fled before authorities arrived on the scene, driven off by the woman Cortez met through Facebook Dating.
Officers later tracked down the suspects near Cortez's home on Monday, leveraging information from license plate reader data to make the arrest. The woman involved in the incident confirmed to investigators that "Cortez, whom she met on Facebook Dating, was with her that afternoon and pulled a gun during the incident," as stated in the arrest report highlighted by an undisclosed source.
This afternoon, Cortez was being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bail set at $5,000. His action during the road rage incident, which saw the gun pointed dangerously, has drawn a swift response from local authorities who continue to crack down on such aggressive behavior on the roads.
