A deadly encounter at a Broward County Transit facility in Pompano Beach late yesterday resulted in two dead, one being a county worker who was fatally shot by deputies after killing his colleague. Broward Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m., at 3201 W. Copans Rd, following reports of an active shooter situation.
Upon arrival, deputies were confronted by a 59-year-old gunman. He opened fire, and the deputies responded, ending the shootout with the suspect's death, as NBC Miami reported. Shortly before the confrontation with the gunman, it was discovered that he had killed a 42-year-old co-worker, following what was described as an argument or dispute, according to BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.
Both employees worked at one of the county's maintenance centers. Further details about the suspect and the victim, including their names, have not been released. A cell phone video obtained by CBS News Miami captured the exchange of gunfire between the assailant and law enforcement officers.
The three deputies involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, "sheriff’s spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright told reporters near the crime scene," per a Miami Herald report. Meanwhile, BSO crime scene, homicide and internal affairs detectives are probing the murder that precipitated their arrival.
Broward County Mayor Nan Rich called the incidents "a tragic loss of life," expressing condolences for the victims. "Let us keep their memories in our thoughts and prayers as we process this terrible loss," Rich stated. Despite the ongoing investigation and likely emotional turmoil, county officials assured that bus operations would run as scheduled on Thursday, though some delays could be expected.
Counselors have been made available to employees affected by the tragic events. Employee assistance teams were dispatched to provide support, signifying a community in shock but bound together in the face of shared grief and disbelief.
