A violent altercation erupted in a Chandler neighborhood, culminating in two men being hospitalized following a pair of shootings, one involving police officers.
The incident unfolded on Carla Vista Drive, near McClintock Drive and Chandler Boulevard, where police were called to a residence around 6 p.m. Sunday in response to reports of an armed individual. As officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two males engaged in a physical conflict, one of whom was armed. Despite officers' commands to relinquish his weapon, the armed man opened fire, injuring the other individual.
In the ensuing chaos, officers retaliated, shooting the suspect, a man reported to be in his fifties. Both the shooter and the initial victim were subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment, though their conditions have yet to be publicly disclosed. "The subject who was armed was given commands to surrender. He did not comply. Instead, he open fired and shot the second male," Chandler Police detailed in a statement, according to a FOX 10 Phoenix report.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Chandler Police have placed three officers on administrative leave, a standard protocol in the wake of police-involved shootings. The relationship between the two men has not been made clear, and authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the early hours of Monday. "Chandler Police are investigating an Officer Involved Shooting near N Country Club Wy and W Carla Vista Dr. The suspect is in custody. No officers have been injured. There is no current threat to the community," the department tweeted, as reported by a 12 News story.
Residents of the typically peaceful community expressed shock at the sound of gunfire disrupting their quiet surroundings. A woman heading to her friend's house in the area recounted the chaos, "They hid in the laundry room, in the laundry room closet, her and her children, not knowing what was going on. I just heard her husband was shot. I don’t know his condition. He’s at the hospital now," she told FOX 10 Phoenix. Another long-time neighbor reflected on the unusual nature of such violence in their community, having never experienced such an incident in over two decades.
