In a chilling incident that unfolded in White House, Tennessee, a man has been taken into custody after a night of terror where projectiles threatened the lives of residents. Charles Benson, 56, embarked on a shooting rampage late Tuesday evening, discharging a high-powered rifle into surrounding homes and at least one local business. According to Smokey Barn News, police were called to Honeysuckle Drive following reports of gunfire and a man yelling in the streets at 11:51 pm. Benson, found by officers in a lawn chair with the firearm on his lap, appeared to be "extremely intoxicated."
Tragedy was narrowly averted when a bullet pierced the wall of a home, barely missing a 7-year-old girl. "Grateful to God, I think it’s the mercy of God," a shaken neighbor, preferring anonymity, told NewsChannel 5. In the aftermath of his reckless use of deadly weapon, Benson was taken into custody without further incident. Police recovered 28 shell casings in a neighbor's yard as evidence of Benson's perilous spray of bullets.
These separate instances paint a troubling picture of gun violence, where the line between intention and recklessness blurs, leaving individuals and communities caught in the crossfire. In the White House shooting, Benson was charged with several offenses, including reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and public intoxication, as noted by NewsChannel 5. His arrest was a cold comfort to those whose peace was shattered that night. As for the conditions of Benson's release, he is bound by the courts to steer clear of alcohol, a stipulation that follows the terms of his bond.
