San Francisco's political landscape is gearing up for another mayoral showdown, as Supervisor Aaron Peskin unofficially threw his hat into a ring for the city's top job. Peskin, who is term-limited out of his role as District 3 supervisor, confirmed to SFist that he will formally announce his bid this Saturday. His entry into the race adds a progressive voice to a lineup already crowded with moderates.
Peskin's decision to declare his campaign at Portsmouth Square, deep in the heart of Chinatown, sends a strategic signal. According to SFist, he's counting on the support of a district he's represented for almost two decades, particularly from Asian voters who have recently been slipping away from current Mayor London Breed in the polls. Meanwhile, the Breed camp has not taken kindly to Peskin's bid, launching an offensive ahead of his official announcement. Her campaign spokesperson, Joe Arellano, described Peskin as "Terminator" of progress, uttering that his election would be tantamount to saying "hasta la vista, baby" to San Francisco's economy and future.
Aaron Peskin's name is not new to controversies; his past term as supervisor was marred by allegations of political bullying, a style that has earned him a contentious reputation among allies and adversaries alike. A spokesperson for mayoral candidate Daniel Lurie pounced on the announcement, releasing a statement that lumped Peskin with other city hall veterans, accusing them of being a part of a corrupt system that fails the city's residents.
Peskin, who is taking another shot at the mayor's office after a hiatus from his role as supervisor, contrasted Breed's criticism with his intention to run a "positive" campaign. He also told NBC Bay Area he's been laying groundwork for this moment by meeting with community organizations and gearing up to resonate with the city's progressives. However, his financial portfolio, which includes substantial holdings in corporations such as Amazon and CVS, has also drawn flak, questioning the authenticity of his progressive badge.
