The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is sending out a stern reminder during this year's Work Zone Awareness Week: Safety First. Sun-soaked Arizona streets may be miles away, but the message of caution rings true nationwide. ADOT stresses the importance of being vigilant and patient when navigating the hustle of construction zones. "Work zones are temporary. But actions behind the wheel can last forever," says the theme of the event, which runs from April 15-19, according to  ADOT's announcement.

ADOT's Director Jennifer Toth emphasized the need for drivers to ease up on the gas pedal and stay alert. Toth noted, "All drivers can help keep themselves and workers safe by slowing down and being alert in work zones." Safety measures are in place not just for shuffling cones and signs, but for protecting lives. Speeding through a work zone not only jeopardizes the hard hats turning wrenches but also every traveler weaving through the orange maze of progress.

According to data from the Federal Highway Administration reported by ADOT, a troubling 80 percent of work zone fatalities nationwide in 2021 were not workers but the drivers and their passengers themselves. Arizona's own tally of tragedy, reaching back over the last several years, paints a similar story with a bloodstained brush: since 2019, at least 59 souls have been claimed by work zone-related crashes.

Staying alert in work zones is more than a mere suggestion—it's survival. ADOT's report is a rollout of grim stats with the intent to jolt motorists into better habits behind the wheel. Sharp turns, unexpected lane merges, and unexpected people working next to the roadway are typical elements that should command attention. A lead foot on the pedal, the very cause of work zone collisions, increases the risk of a chain-reaction fender bender, with rear-end smashups cited as the most frequent accident in these settings, per ADOT's statements.
