In a bizarre early morning incident, a man took an unintended ride in a garbage truck after falling asleep in an Austin dumpster. The startling discovery occurred around 3:30 a.m. Monday when a waste collector, operating in downtown Austin, noticed a human figure inside his truck through a camera. The individual had dozed off inside a recycling bin that was picked up near West Sixth and Colorado streets, as reported by KVUE.
According to The American-Statesman, the Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the 500 block of Congress Avenue shortly before 3:40 a.m., where the man, having extricated himself from the trash, clung to the outside of the truck but could not descend due to his injuries. EMS medics transported the individual to Dell Seton Medical Center with possible serious injuries.
While it could have turned out much worse, the man was fortunate that the waste collector took prompt action, assisting the man as he climbed out of the dumpster, and remained perched atop the truck until firefighters arrived. Members of the Austin Fire Department then helped him down to safety.
