A Hanover man has been booked for allegedly threatening to destroy Tufts Medical Center, unleashing a tirade of hate-filled threats against the facility and its staff. District Attorney Kevin Hayden disclosed that 34-year-old Graham Abraham is now squared up against charges, following a series of menacing phone calls that ratcheted up tensions and prompted swift legal action.
Judge Mark Summerville has since ordered a $5,000 bail, firmly directing Abraham to keep his distance from the Boston hospital. A recommendation for mental health services came on the heels of a court clinician's evaluation, hinting at underlying issues that may to partly explain, yet never excuse, the vitriol and threats spewed. According to the statement released by the District Attorney's Office, the accused not only faces the current charges but also other accusations including threats to commit a crime, and assault and disorderly conduct in separate incidents.
The crux of the case hinges on an event dated February 2, when Abraham allegedly cautioned a hospital employee over the phone that "everybody is going to die." An audit of the recorded calls made to Tufts Medical Center revealed Abraham as the voice threatening mass violence and peppering his speech with racial pejoratives. "All (expletive) in your shit vomit hospital must die... ready to bomb and blow up your hospital. Got guns and knives kill all (expletive). All (expletive) must die. (Expletive) roaches and scum of the earth. All (expletive) must be slaughtered and killed," the harrowing messages delineated, as reported by the District Attorney's Office.
These threats weren't solitary outbursts. Abraham had reportedly been making them relentlessly from January 15 to February 2. His history of similar threats extends beyond the hospital to encompass more than 70 unnerving calls placed to Amtrak in January alone. This pattern of behavior has landed Abraham on the radar of various law enforcement agencies, culminating in a trespass order from Amtrak police and a ban from all Amtrak facilities. In addition, the ATF has also flagged him, rendering it illegal for him to purchase firearms.
District Attorney Hayden weighed in on the disturbing situation, underscoring the gravity of threat assessment in today’s climate. "We must take all forms of threats seriously. The challenge to law enforcement is finding a balance between a person’s mental health needs and the public’s right to be safe and secure in all settings," Hayden declared. He emphasized, "This defendant has made numerous threats and disturbing statements to individuals and institutions that have helped or tried to help him in some way. We’re moving forward with criminal action here because it is clearly necessary to prevent potential public harm," according to the District Attorney's Office.
