Brooklyn Park is gearing up for Severe Weather Awareness Week, joining communities across the state to prep residents for the havoc Mother Nature can unleash as spring weather hits its stride. From April 8 to 12, individuals and families are encouraged to get their ducks in a row should severe weather strike.
In line with the week's activities, a tornado drill is on the schedule for this Thursday, April 11, with the sirens set to sound off at 1:45 pm and again at 6:45 pm, according to the City of Brooklyn Park. It's an ideal time for folks at home, work, or school to rehearse their emergency plans and brush up on safety protocols. The drill, a mock run of the real deal, helps to ensure that everyone knows how to act fast and smart when seconds count.
Officials urge residents to keep an eye on the skies by tuning into reliable weather forecasts and warnings, noting that staying informed is key in spring's unpredictable climate. A family emergency plan should also be in place, including a rundown of evacuation routes, rendezvous points, and ways to stay in touch.
Don't be caught without essentials if a storm hits—health authorities recommend assembling an emergency kit. Think bottled water, snacks that won't spoil, medications, and the like. Flashlights and fresh batteries won't go a miss either, along with a solid first aid kit, as reported by the City of Brooklyn Park. Securing your property is another smart move on the checklist—batten down hatches by securing loose items, doing a bit of preemptive landscaping, and reinforcing vulnerable spots around your house.
