In an unexpected turn of events at Tuesday's school board meeting, Broward Superintendent Dr. Peter Licata made the announcement that he will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year, as Local 10 reported. Licata, who has only served as superintendent since July, cited health concerns as the reason for his early departure.
"It is with great sadness that I write this letter informing you of my anticipated retirement on 12-31-2024. I communicated to the board on 12-17-23, which is protected from the public record, regarding the status of a, medical condition that I have been receiving treatments for," Licata told the board members. This statement was then followed by a swift motion from school board member Lori Alhadeff to discuss an agreement for Licata's immediate mutual separation from the district, Local 10 detailed.
Bringing more than 30 years of educational experience to the table, Licata's tenure in South Florida has been marked by dedication to a student-centric approach. "It is an exciting time for Broward County schools and I believe there is an amazing staff that has been assembled here for great things. I can't thank the community enough for their faith and trust in me," Dr. Licata expressed his gratitude and optimism for the district's future in a statement obtained by CBS News Miami.
With an academic resume that boasts degrees in Business Administration, Political Science, Educational Leadership, and a Ph.D. in Global Leadership from Lynn University, Licata's career has been driven by a mission to prepare students for the challenges of the 21st-century workforce. Despite his impending departure, he has been credited with assembling a dynamic team poised for continued success within the Broward school system. Deputy Superintendent Howard Hepburn is expected to take on the role of interim superintendent, a move that seems, uncontested amongst board members, as reported by Local 10.
Prior to his stewardship in Broward, Licata built an extensive career with the Palm Beach School District, leaving behind a legacy of progress and dedication in his roles as a teacher, principal, and regional superintendent. His departure follows the ousting of former Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright, rounding out a period of significant leadership changes within one of the largest school districts in the nation. Details on the search for a new, permanent superintendent have yet to be divulged.
