A toddler on Cape Cod had to be airlifted for medical treatment after a dog attacked the young child on Easter Sunday, local authorities reported. The Wellfleet Police Department said that the 2-year-old was bitten by a pit bull mix at a residence in Wellfleet. The incident occurred at about 2:15 pm at 100 East Hill Road, according to a Wellfleet Police press release.
The victim was quickly transported to Cape Cod Gateway Airport by the Wellfleet Fire Department, and from there, was flown to a Boston hospital. The child's injuries are not believed to quickly be life-threatening, the police indicated in their statement. The identities of all involved parties are known to the authorities, and the dog attack is currently under investigation.
The Wellfleet Police have yet to release additional details about the incident or the condition of the child following the attack. Authorities have not disclosed whether the dog belonged to the family of the victim or to another party.
Such incidents have raised ongoing debates about dog breeds and public safety, though the exact circumstances surrounding this particular case remain to be disclosed by law enforcement. The community now keenly waits for updates as the Wellfleet Police continue to investigate just how this Easter holiday turned to be so sharply interrupted by violence.
