Residents in Chicago's 2nd District have been put on high alert after a string of burglaries, the Chicago Police Department has warned. According to a community alert released by the department, multiple apartment break-ins have been reported where the culprits gained entry through doors or windows and helped themselves to valuables inside.
The burglaries took place across several locations within the Wentworth area; including a March 29 incident on the 4900 block of south Drexel Blvd., followed by a March 31 strike on the 4500 block of south Evans Ave., and the latest on April 3, on the 4400 block of south Drexel Blvd. The times of these incidents have varied, with perpetrators choosing both the veil of morning hours and the blanket of night to carry out their acts.
In response to these incidents, the police have issued safety tips for area residents. Homeowners are advised to keep their properties well-illuminated and to secure doors and windows effectively. Any signs of broken entry points should be repaired promptly. They further recommend using video surveillance and having agreements with neighbors to monitor any unusual activity.
In case of a burglary, the advisory insists on preserving the crime scene by not touching anything and calling the police immediately. They also suggest saving a copy of any surveillance footage that could aid investigators. If a witness approaches, residents are urged to obtain their contact information, to provide police with further leads.
