In an effort to arm Chicago's youth with the survival skills necessary for confronting modern-day threats, the LifeTough Kids Boxing Club hosted its 28th child safety seminar on Chicago's Northwest Side, per a CBS report. The event, aimed at children aged 6 to 18, included simulations designed to educate them on how to handle frightening scenarios such as kidnappings, active shooter situations, internet safety, drugs, and sexual assault issues.
Drawing on the expertise of law enforcement and public safety professionals, the seminar emphasized the importance of using one's voice as a primary defense against potential abductors and also taught participants how to find a safe exit during an active shooter event, looking to find a safe exit, they had airsoft guns to replicate the sound of real gunfire, which is a critical component in re creating the intensity of such situations. According to CBS, the club is an all-volunteer organization, composed of police officers, firefighters, veterans, and first responders dedicated to the well-being of the community's children.
Steve Linder of the LifeTough Kids Boxing Club highlighted the hands-on approach taken in their seminars, informing WGN-TV that "You got to tell them what to do, what they are allowed to do and just practice it and roleplay," recognizing the potential for children to freeze in fear during a crisis, the seminar sought to mitigate such paralysis through repeated training in a controlled environment.
Melissa Camacho, whose child participated in the Sunday’s event, conveyed the parental perspective to WGN-TV, expressing a poignant mix of hope and resignation, saying, "You don’t want it to happen to them but now they’ve been exposed to it, year after year, scenario after scenario, hopefully, and I pray, that they’ll be prepared."
