Senator John Cornyn is speaking out as National Child Abuse Prevention Month unfolds, with a spotlight shining on the issue of online child exploitation. Hosting a roundtable, survivors and law enforcement came together Thursday to discuss their experiences and strategies to tackle the crime. Cornyn detailed the Project Safe Childhood Act aimed at modernizing the fight against these digital predators, according to KXAN.
While advocating the need for more sophisticated tools to combat the growing cyber threat, Cornyn stressed the disparity in resources among law enforcement agencies. "These tools need to evolve, we need to try and get them in the hands of more and more law enforcement agencies, because not many law enforcement agencies have the resources that, for example, Travis County has," Cornyn said in a statement obtained by KXAN.
The urgency was also evident as the legislation to tackle these issues remains stalled in Congress despite Senate approval in October. Detective Michael Schultheis of the APD’s Organized Crime Division's Child Exploitation Unit, speaking at the event, mentioned a disturbing case involving an online predator on Austin’s Hike and Bike Trail – spotlighting the imminent threat and the dire need for immediate action, as per FOX 7 Austin.
The bottleneck in progress appears to be rooted in Washington politics, with Cornyn expressing his concern. "Well, unfortunately, there's a lot of other things going on up in Washington. It's distracting from important things like this that should be a priority," Senator Cornyn told FOX 7 Austin. This delay continues despite promising tools like Nibble, a K9 trained to find hidden electronic devices, showcased as an example of initiatives that could receive a boost from the Act's passage.
