In a tragic turn of events, two individuals lost their lives, and six others were wounded at a block party in Orange Mound, as confirmed by Memphis Police. Memphis' interim police chief CJ Davis said that a total of eight people were shot during the unsanctioned gathering that drew 200-300 people to the corner of Carnes Avenue and Grand Street near Orange Mound Park. The shooting took place shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, according to reports from Local Memphis.

Upon their arrival, responding officers located five victims with gunshot wounds. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, and three were taken to the hospital in critical condition. One victim has since been released, while the other remains in critical condition, as FOX13 Memphis reported. The Memphis Police Department is still on the hunt for at least two suspects believed to be responsible for the shots fired among the revelers.

Confusion ensued following the ordeal as initial reports erroneously stated that 16 people had been shot. Memphis Police later clarified that the total number of gunshot victims was eight. This discrepancy appears to have arisen from some individuals being counted more than once as they sought medical attention, as detailed by News Nation Now. The shooting is currently noted as one of the largest mass shootings in Memphis' history.
