Commuters on the Rickenbacker Causeway experienced a vehicular chokehold Sunday, as northbound traffic was stifled into hours of immobility due to a construction project overseen by the Florida Department of Transportation. The congestion, a result of the flyover's closure for a bridge deck rehabilitation, ensnared travelers between Key Biscayne and Miami, leaving them trapped for up to five hours in a gridlocked hell.
The flyover bridge, which serves as a critical juncture for vehicles heading to U.S. 1/South Dixie Highway and northbound I-95, was initially scheduled for a two-month closure starting Sunday evening, as per reports from CBS News Miami. However, advocates for the hapless motorists caught in the jam, like Mayor Joe Rasco of Key Biscayne, have declared the situation untenable, compelling a reevaluation of the traffic management strategy.
Amidst the uproar, FDOT found itself rebounding from the backlash with an expedited response, reopening the northbound lanes to I-95 as early as Monday morning. According to a statement obtained by WSVN, FDOT admitted that "While the original maintenance of traffic plan was developed with all appropriate factors considered, it was overwhelmed with the volume of vehicles ingressing and egressing from Key Biscayne yesterday."
FDOT further promised to work hand in hand with local officials on refined traffic management plans and signalization coordination. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava weighed in on the fiasco, signaling her intent on social media to reach out to partners in a bid to cut through the bureaucratic tape and deliver relief to the frustrated public. The potential reprieve couldn't come soon enough, as the original project was vital to the bridges' near half-century-old structural integrity, necessitating enduring maintenance for safe travel, FDOT explained.
The consternation of drivers who took to their emails to vent on Sunday afternoon to 7News has been heard loud and clear, leading to these swift corrective measures. The southbound lanes, on the other hand, are on schedule to fully reopen following the installation of guardrails by Wednesday morning.
