A former Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually battering a minor, as stated by Nashville government officials. 60-year-old Gary Schleimer, a past drama teacher at H.G. Hill Middle School, found himself behind bars after a grand jury indictment over an incident that allegedly took place in a classroom setting.
Reports indicate that Schleimer, residing in Nolensville, was taken into custody yesterday evening by local law enforcement. He stands accused of having inappropriately touched a female student's chest from behind, above her clothing. This purportedly occurred while they were to alone remain in the classroom, according to a Nashville government statement. The incident was subsequently reported to the school's principal.
Schleimer, who had previously not been rehired for the new school year by MNPS before this accusation came to light in the fall of 2022, now faces serious charges. A Nashville Criminal Court judge has determined that the gravity of the allegations justifies a bond set at $100,000.
The Nashville community has been grappling with the shockwaves sent forth by this case, illustrating the treacherous terrain that must be navigated when those entrusted to safeguard and educate the young, are instead charged with betraying that sacred trust. As the proceedings continue, Schleimer remains incarcerated in Nashville, having been detained without major incident by police officers in Williamson County.
