The City of Fort Lauderdale has teamed up with Murphy Pipeline Contractors to replace old water mains in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, a move that will see new 10-inch diameter pipes made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a material touted for its resistance to corrosion, according to an announcement on the city's official website.
The replacement is set to cover areas including N New River Drive E, SE 5th Avenue, SE 3rd Avenue, and SE 4th Street, this initiative is a part of the city's effort to shield its water infrastructure from the effects of groundwater and saltwater. A trenchless technology method will be used, which is expected to cause less disruption than traditional construction methods, the city's statement explained. However, excavation will still be necessary in certain spots.
Work on this essential infrastructure project began on October 2, 2023, with crews working mainly from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., although overnight work was sometimes required to stay on schedule. Despite facing the typical hiccups like bad weather, by the first week of February 2024, the pipe installation was completed. The city promised to maintain water service throughout the construction by setting up temporary connections.
Recent progress included city staff walking through the construction sites with the contractor, making a list of deficiencies that need to be addressed. In the coming week, these identified issues are slated for correction. Traffic, while affected, is being managed with one lane closures in each direction within project limits and with personnel onsite directing the flow of vehicles.
For those caught in the crossfire of construction, the City of Fort Lauderdale has extended its apologies for any inconveniences and has expressed gratitude for the community's patience. Contact details for William Power, the Senior Project Manager, have been provided for residents with questions or concerns. Additionally, updates and information can be obtained through City Hall or the Neighbor Service Center. More details can be found on the City of Fort Lauderdale official website.
