Fort Lauderdale Man Charged With Arson in Jewish Center Blaze, No Hate Crime Allegations PresentedSource: Broward Sheriff’s Office

A 50-year-old man was cuffed and confined to his cell for allegedly setting a Jewish community center in Fort Lauderdale ablaze, but strikingly, hate crime charges are not on the table. Scott Hannaford, the man accused of igniting the fire that demolished the Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center, faces arson among other felony counts, authorities declared Wednesday.

Details divulged by the Broward State Attorney's Office paint a picture of Hannaford as a man on a mission of destruction. Shortly before attacking the Jewish center, the accused was also said to have tried setting the neighboring Kavasutra Kava Bar alight. With both religious and nonreligious establishments targeted within minutes of each other, prosecutors reasoned that their playbook—guided by Florida state law—did not warrant tagging the inferno as a hate-fueled act, according to NBC Miami.

"Our commitment to combating hate crimes is steadfast and vigorously pursuing these heinous and serious crimes is a top priority for me and the Broward State Attorney’s Office," Harold F. Pryor, Broward State Attorney, underscored in a statement referenced by the Miami Herald. He vowed to file hate crime enhancements when the evidence provides. His office slapped Hannaford with first-degree and second-degree arson, felony criminal mischief, and cocaine possession.

Currently jailed with a $102,000 bond hanging over his head, Hannaford, whose transient life threads through Fort Lauderdale like the wake of a ship, has been revealed to suffer from mental health issues. "During my meeting with the rabbi this week, I assured him, his congregation, and our entire Broward community that we will continue to stand together against hate," Pryor eloquently stated for the Miami Herald. If Hannaford is found guilty of all charges, his stay behind bars could extend up to 65 years.
