The decades-long manhunt for a fugitive accused of a grisly 2002 murder and kidnapping in Lauderhill, Florida, has ended with the suspect behind bars, FBI officials announced. Kareem Jobbar Lightbourne, 47, was apprehended in the Dominican Republic before being expelled back to the United States due to immigration violations.

According to Local 10 News, Lightbourne is alleged to have fatally shot a man and subsequently kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and their 2-year-old son at gunpoint in December 2002. Sources say he then fled the state of Florida, managing to elude capture for over 20 years. Lightbourne's arrest brings a measure of closure to a case that has long haunted the Broward County community.

Currently, Lightbourne is detained at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail without bond. Official records reveal charges against him include first-degree murder, armed kidnapping, and grand theft. At the time of his capture, no attorney information for Lightbourne was available.

The victim in the case, identified as 23-year-old Kirk Ennis, was reportedly shot in the home of Lightbourne's ex-girlfriend, Monifa Smith. After the murder, Lightbourne is said to have to quickly taken Smith and her young son against their will, according to NBC Miami. The FBI's diligent efforts in collaboration with international authorities eventually led to the successful apprehension of Lightbourne.
