A major thorn in Germantown's side emerged Tuesday as a crucial section of Poplar Avenue was shut down due to a damaged gas line, causing traffic disruptions and immediate diversion strategies, officials said. The incident, reported by the Germantown Police Department, occurred at the intersection with Kimbrough Road and has led to eastbound cars being rerouted north onto Kimbrough Road while those heading west are being directed south onto Scruggs Drive, as Action News 5 detailed in their coverage.
While this vital conduit of suburban thoroughfare lies in wait for restoration, the police implore drivers to tread with care as the work, potentially perilous with its invisible hazards, unfolds in full swing, and though the reason for the interruption was not immediately disclosed the Germantown PD's advisory on WREG's website confirmed this unfolding inconvenience offers no clarity beyond the directives for vehicular passage.
The Germantown Police Department's social media missive—a post on their official Facebook page—echoed the traffic diversion announcement, imploring residents and visitors alike "Poplar Ave at Kimbrough Rd is currently shut down. Eastbound Poplar Ave is being diverted North onto Kimbrough Rd. Westbound Poplar Ave is being diverted South on Scruggs Drive. Please exercise caution when traversing this area," according to the alert issued by the Germantown Police Department.
As of press time, there was no estimation provided for the repair efforts' culmination nor a specified timeline for when Poplar Avenue might resume its normal flow.
