A tragic scene unraveled in Florida as a University of Florida student was arrested for the murder of his mother. According to CBS News Miami, 21-year-old Emmanuel Espinoza drove from Gainesville to Frostproof to attend a family event and allegedly stabbed his mother multiple times after she opened the door to greet him.
Following the brutal attack, Espinoza reportedly called 911 to declare having committed the act. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd was quoted in a statement obtained by WSVN saying, "We talked to him and he confessed. He said, 'You know, I have wanted to kill my mother for many, many years because she got on my nerves.'" The student described his relationship with his mother to officers as about "an eight out of 10" stating he "really loved her, but she irritated him." Sheriff Judd described the incident as "a very sad day with an inexplicable, vicious murder."
The victim, Elvia Espinoza, 46, was a beloved second-grade teacher in the community and was reportedly on a call with another relative when her son attacked her. While the motive remains under investigation, the disturbing confession has nonetheless sent shockwaves throughout the Frostproof community where the crime took place.
Jail records following the incident did not list an attorney for Espinoza. The case, which is still in preliminary stages, sees the young man charged with first-degree murder. Sheriff Judd expressed grief over the loss of Elvia, who was known and loved by many. He lamented to have likely never truly understand the motive behind such a heinous act as he explained: "This is a horrible event."
