A Harper Woods woman has been taken into custody after a violent confrontation on a Detroit freeway led her to allegedly stab another driver with scissors. The incident occurred on the ramp from northbound Interstate 75 to eastbound Interstate 696 in Hazel Park, causing significant traffic delays during the late afternoon rush.
According to reports by The Detroit News, the chaos began around 5:40 p.m. when Michigan State Police received a silent 911 call. Dispatchers were able to quickly locate the scene using freeway cameras, witnessing one driver recklessly continue to back into the other vehicle after the initial collision. Troopers dispatched to the scene found the aftermath of the crash and a 37-year-old woman, scissors in hand, having just injured the other motorist.
The victim, while treated on site by emergency medical services, refused to subsequently be taken to a hospital. As per the WWJ Newsradio report, the suspect showed signs of impairment and was arrested on the spot by police. She then made self-harm threats and was transported to a hospital for a mental health assessment. Details regarding her impairment, specifically whether due to alcohol or drugs, have not been divulged as of yet.
The Detroit Free Press added that following her arrest, the woman was processed at a state police post before her self-harm threats lead to be taken for evaluation. The ongoing investigation looks to piece together the events that precipitated the violent encounter. Prosecutors are now reviewing the case to determine the exact charges as the woman's name has yet to be released.
Additional details on the incident, including the cause of the crash and whether other passengers were involved, have not been made available.
