A La Vernia man is facing the cold, hard reality of a 25-year prison sentence after being found guilty on multiple counts of receiving child pornography. Jacob Wayne Peek, 44, landed the quarter-century term after a trove of child sexual abuse material was discovered on his cell phone and SIM card.
In a disturbing find by the Wilson County Sheriff's Office back in October 2021, when Peek was first arrested for aggravated sexual assault of a child, authorities uncovered a "shocking number" of child porn images. Further investigation by the FBI San Antonio led, to a federal search warrant of Peek’s devices in January 2022. Within just one folder they found some 16,000 images, 793 of which were confirmed as child sexual abuse material, KSAT reported.
U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza described the severity of the case, saying, "Peek possessed a shocking number of images of children enduring sexual abuse," according to a release from the United States Attorney’s Office. He added, "By receiving and viewing the images he compounded the harm inflicted on those children by the predators who perpetrated and recorded the dreadful acts against them." Peek was convicted in August 2022 after a jury trial found him guilty on all four counts.
The case, which was investigated by the FBI and the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, highlighted the critical role played by a young victim’s courage to report abuse. "Thanks to a young victim who had the courage to report abuse to trusted adults – and the subsequent actions of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office – Jacob Peek will no longer be able to victimize children and will spend years in prison," FBI San Antonio Field Office's Special Agent in Charge Aaron Tapp stated, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. This case was also a part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at tackling the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
The sentence laid down by the federal court in San Antonio is meant to send a message to child predators that the actions of individuals like Peek will not be tolerated and will meet with severe consequences. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tracy Thompson and Bettina Richardson prosecuted the case, which has now put Peek behind bars for 300 months, where, he will not have the opportunity to inflict further harm upon the most vulnerable of our society.
