Chaos erupted on the University of Memphis campus when police arrested a 39-year-old man wielding an axe, according to officials. The suspect, identified as Jamey Moody, led officers on a brief foot pursuit Monday before being taken into custody.
Moody, allegedly seen traversing campus grounds armed with the axe, defied orders to relinquish his weapon and subsequently attempted to flee from law enforcement, reported WREG. After the chase, which was of short duration, Moody was apprehended and charged with carrying a weapon on school property and evading arrest.
In a statement obtained by Action News 5, Moody claimed he brought the axe for self-defense. Despite the potential threat posed, officials released Moody on his own recognizance to await his upcoming court appearance on Wednesday.
Further details surrounding the motivations behind Moody's actions remain unclear, though the incident, which could've ended in violence, was neutralized without reported injuries; Memphis Police Department's response underscores the ever-present balance between public safety and individual rights in spaces designed for the pursuit of knowledge and growth.
