A deadly confrontation unraveled in a Hialeah neighborhood early Wednesday, leaving one man dead following a dispute involving a woman's ex-boyfriend, police officials reported. Hialeah Police said they received a call about a shooting in the 4000 block of West 13th Lane at around 6:40 a.m. and discovered the body of 26-year-old Christian Rueda at the scene.

According to Local 10, Rueda arrived at the home uninvited and began fighting with 23-year-old Omar Jamal Huggins, a friend of his ex-girlfriend, Victoria Marie Gonzalez. Detectives indicated that Rueda, who has a troubled past with Gonzalez including stalking and harassment, tried to grab a gun from Huggins during the altercation, resulting in Rueda being shot and killed.

Hialeah Police Department spokesperson, Lt. Eddie Rodriguez, told NBC Miami, "This is an ex-boyfriend (Rueda) that she’s had problems with in the past, restraining orders, stalking. As he arrived at the home, he happens to see a male exiting the house." Rodriguez continued explaining that even after Huggins warned Rueda about being armed, the latter continued the attack, which led to the fatal struggle for the firearm.

Following the shooting, Huggins and Gonzalez were taken to the Hialeah police headquarters for questioning. Gonzalez and Huggins cooperated fully with the investigation, stated Rodriguez. He confirmed, "Ms. Gonzalez and Mr. Huggins both fully cooperated with the investigation, and it was determined, that this was a case of self-defense and thus, a justifiable shooting." Officers later determined that Huggins had been legally carrying a concealed firearm.

Evidence, including two vehicles, was processed at the scene while detectives canvassed and interviewed potential witnesses in the usually tranquil area. Residents like Manuel Chirino, expressed shock at the violence in their neighborhood, "I only heard two shots," he said to NBC Miami, "This is a really quiet neighborhood." Police have since sent their findings to the State Attorney’s Office for a final review, as part of standard procedure in such cases.
