A violent altercation in North Memphis escalated to a fatal shooting on Tuesday evening, with one man dead and a woman hospitalized. The Memphis Police Department reported that the initial incident was a fight involving two groups around 5:47 p.m. near the intersection of North Hollywood Street and Peres Avenue.
According to Action News 5, the police were called to respond to the brawl, which later appeared to have directly led to the subsequent shootings. Less than an hour after the fight, at approximately 6:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to a second scene on the 1500 block of Merton Street to find a man shot dead.
The deceased male victim was found at the scene by authorities, as stated by FOX13 Memphis. In a separate but related incident, a woman with gunshot wounds managed to drive herself a mile and a half away to flag down officers at the intersection of Range Line Road and James Road. She was then transported to Regional One Hospital bearing non-critical injuries.
WREG News reports that the investigation is still ongoing, as detectives work to piece together the events that transpired between the initial fight and the shootings. Police believe that the violence on North Hollywood Street may have been the spark that ignited the deadly use of firearms. The identities of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin, and the police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the shooting.
