Authorities in New Hampshire are scouring the area for an inmate who took a leisurely walk out of minimum-security and straight into the unknown. The manhunt is on for Jake Demeritt, 37, who left his transitional housing unit in Concord and failed to make his way back, officials said.

According to a report from NBC Boston, Demeritt was on the lam since Tuesday when he reportedly ventured off to work and then vanished, prompting the Department of Corrections to slap an "escape status" on him at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. Armed with a distinctive look that features tattoo sleeves on both arms, and a host of other inked inscriptions including the word "bang" sprawled across his left knuckles, Demeritt is not the type to blend in with a crowd.

His rap sheet includes charges for stalking, possession of a controlled drug, and other offenses, setting his parole date for June 30, 2024, with a max out date of June 30, 2026, should he remain at large, Boston 25 News reported. Meanwhile, the 5-foot-11 escapee with the beard, and blue eyes remains on the run, his gray crew neck T-shirt, jeans, and white sneakers are now his unofficial uniform for evasion.

Officials are urging the public to keep their eyes peeled and dial the Department of Corrections' Chief of Investigations, Jay Darrah, at 603-848-2569 with any information that could lead to Demeritt's capture. After all, community vigilance could be the key to slamming shut the door he so casually strolled through.
