A four-year-old boy's life was tragically cut short in a senseless accidental shooting in South Memphis, authorities reported. The young victim, found with a life-threatening gunshot wound, ultimately succumbed to his injuries at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, as stated by WREG.
Memphis Police said the fatal event unfolded late Sunday night in the 1900 block of Frisco Avenue in the Castalia Heights neighborhood. In the wake of this family's nightmare, the boy's father, identified as 32-year-old Vincent Gilliams, faces serious charges including Aggravated Child Abuse – Neglect, and Criminally Negligent Homicide, as detailed by officials. Setting his bond at $300,000, Gilliams is expected to appear in court tomorrow morning, as reported by WREG.
The scenario, as relayed by the father to the police, was unfortunately mundane until the moment of the tragedy; Gilliams had removed his clothing, which contained a loaded 10mm handgun in a pocket, and laid them on the couch, subsequently engrossing himself in a video game with a headset on. The child's mother, reportedly asleep on the couch, was unaware of the lurking danger until the sound of a gunshot broke the silence, noted FOX13 Memphis.
Neighbors like Lilly Smith, who has witnessed the ebb and flow of violence in the community over her 40-year residence, expressed a weary desire for change, lamenting, “You can’t sit outside unless you violent. Someone wants to fight. Someone wants to shoot," she told WREG. Dr. Regan Williams, the Trauma Medical Director at Le Bonheur, disclosed a harrowing statistic to corroborate the neighborhood's woes, saying that the number of child gunshot victims so far in 2024 has surged to 41, more than double from previous years.
As the investigation into this latest incident of juvenile bloodshed in Memphis moves forward, the community grapples with the harsh realities of gun safety and the omnipresent hazards within their own homes. Police are continuing their inquiries into the matter, thus far, no additional information has been released.
