Tragedy struck at a Memphis carwash where an argument over a modest sum and food stamps escalated into gunfire, resulting in the death of one man. Cordero Hogg, 27, has been charged with first-degree murder, as reported by WREG, in connection with the deadly incident that took place on March 30. Law enforcement stated that an argument over money and an EBT card led to the fatal shooting.
While refueling at a neighboring Exxon gas station, an off-duty police officer, upon hearing gunshots, was quick to respond. The off-duty officer went over to the scene at the carwash, where she witnessed Hogg putting something into a black backpack, according to Action News 5. Backup was called promptly after taking Hogg into custody without incident.
Hogg, who is already a convicted felon with a history of violent felonies, faced additional charges for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Ibn Akbar, identified as the victim, was shot multiple times by Hogg over a dispute purportedly concerning $75 and food stamps, as mentioned in a FOX13 news report. Akbar was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The Memphis community remains in shock as the violent incident over what seems to have been a fight over necessities shook the core of Stage Road. Hogg, detained by the quick actions of an off-duty officer while getting gas, now faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence. The matter, which has now moved to the courts, continues to unfold as those touched by the tragedy seek justice and an understanding of the senseless loss.
