The Arthur Lee McDuffie State Historical Marker was unveiled on Saturday, epitomizing a man's existence beyond his death in 1979 that sparked outrage across Miami, as reported by Miami-Dade County News.
At the ceremony saturated with emotions and long-delayed acknowledgment, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside Commissioners Keon Hardemon and René García, and City of Miami Commissioner Christine King were present to witness the tribute. The commemorated life of Arthur McDuffie, who was an African American father, a former U.S. Marine, and a victim to the injustice of his time, was honored before his family, community advocates, and historians.
Emphasizing the community's strength through acknowledgment of its diverse past, Sarah Cody, the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Chief, remarked on the event's significance. "With the unveiling of the Arthur Lee McDuffie State Historical Marker, we are given an opportunity to recognize Mr. McDuffie and the life he led here in Miami – to remind us that he was more than just a flashpoint in Miami’s history," Cody stated, details of which were obtained by the Miami-Dade County News.
