Michigan Fugitive Accused of Sexual Assault Arrested in Florida, Extradited to Face ChargesSource: Michigan State Police

A Michigan fugitive, who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman back in 2021, has been nabbed by the authorities in Florida and shipped back to face the music. Colton Jarod Meeker, a 28-year-old man from Central Lake, was arraigned on Wednesday on charges including first-degree criminal sexual conduct and being pegged as a habitual offender, reported The Detroit News.

According to police reports, fleeing the state after the alleged crime, Meeker couldn't be located for a spell. His capture wasn't until March 19, when U.S. Marshals snapped him up in the Sunshine State, as MLive details. The suspect was then extradited to Antrim County Jail this Tuesday, where he'll cool his heels without bond until a court hearing on May 1.

The original incident took place while the victim was camping in Antrim County with friends. After the alleged assault, Michigan State Police troopers gathered evidence at the scene, which included clothing and a blanket, according to UpNorthLive. The Antrim County Prosecutor's Office put out a warrant for Meeker's arrest in June 2023 following the police probe.

Should he be convicted, Meeker is staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence for the criminal sexual conduct charge, plus additional time for his status as a three-time habitual offender. Brought back to appear via video in the 86th District Court, Meeker’s next appointment with justice is chalked in for early May, as court records indicate.
