A man has been charged after his gun accidentally went off inside an Ipswich brewery last week, injuring a child and another patron, police report. The incident happened at True North Ale Company when the firearm owned by 35-year-old Donald Terenzoni of Newton, New Hampshire discharged unexpectedly. According to CBS Boston, Terenzoni suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was subsequently hospitalized.
Terenzoni is currently facing serious charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. As noted by authorities, a child present in the dining area at the time was grazed by shrapnel and was swiftly taken to a local hospital. Another individual decided to not be transported after suffering a minor injury from shrapnel. The accused will appear before the Ipswich District Court on Friday to be arraigned on his charges.
Ipswich police detailed that Terenzoni's accidental discharge occurred shortly after his family arrived at the brewery, causing chaos as patrons dined. The local brewery, known for its craft beers and community atmosphere, found itself grappling with the aftermath. In a statement obtained by NBC Boston, the owners of True North Ale, Jake and Gary Rogers, said, "A customer visiting with his family accidentally discharged his concealed handgun at the floor shortly after arriving, allegedly due to irresponsible handling." They added, "We are licensed gun owners ourselves yet we must insist that a place like our Taproom is not a place for firearms."
The incident has reignited discussions on gun safety and the appropriateness of carrying concealed weapons in family-oriented public spaces. The Rogers brothers openly stated their dedication to offering a safe and enjoyable venue, "Being a safe place to relax should go without saying," they communicated in a statement mentioned by Hoodline. The brewery wishes to continue to be a fun community and family gathering spot, a vision threatened by such unfortunate events.
As the community and True North Ale Company move forward, the handling of such situations is under scrutiny. The quick response by staff and first responders was commended as they helped to manage the situation effectively. While charges have been pressed against Terenzoni, the conversation around responsible firearm ownership persists, challenging the balance between rights and public safety.
