Worcester's streets got a bit safer thanks to the sharp eyes of the city's new Crime Gun Intelligence Unit. Detectives from the unit made their first bust, recovering a Glock capable of firing more than 10 rounds, following a proactive stop on Channing Street last night.
The unit was investigating a ShotSpotter alert when they spotted a vehicle with heavily tinted windows and a covered license plate, recognizable from a prior alert on March 19. Detectives wasted little to no time pulling over the vehicle once its obscured plate came into clear view and was identified from the earlier incident.
Before the detectives could even step out of their patrol car, they noticed the vehicle's passenger, later identified as 19-year-old Suil Rosario, making suspicious movements towards the backseat. Upon the detectives' approach, both Rosario and the driver, 19-year-old Giancarlos Guzman, were asked to step out and were subsequently detained for further investigation.
No stranger to precaution, the detectives were quickly able to find a firearm inside the car. The Worcester Police Department later confirmed that the firearm was a Glock 42, a model with the capability to hold an extended amount of ammunition. Unfortunately, neither Rosario nor Guzman could provide the necessary legal documentation to carry the weapon or even to operate the vehicle, according to a press release on Worcester Police Department's website.
Facing multiple charges, Rosario has been accused of "Unlawful Carry of a Firearm, Unlawful Carry of a Firearm Loaded, Possession of ammunition without FID and Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm." Meanwhile, Guzman is being charged with "Operating a Motor Vehicle Without a License," according to the Worcester Police Department press release. These arrests symbolize a stride forward in the relentless push against the plague of gun violence within the city.
Worcester's newly-minted Crime Gun Intelligence Unit, a beacon of hope for many in the community, stands dedicated in the pursuit to produce actionable intelligence. It seeks to disrupt the cycle of violence by targeting the proliferation of illegal firearms, to create a safer environment for the city’s denizens.
