A tragic incident occurred on I-55 near Cicero Avenue, where one person was killed, and another was left injured following a roadside crash, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
On Sunday, around 6:40 p.m., three individuals were involved in a routine yet precarious act of vehicular maintenance—changing a tire on the expressway's southbound shoulder. Their attempts were catastrophically interrupted when a pickup truck swerved off the road, and crashed into both the stationary vehicle, and two of the people beside it, according to CBS News Chicago.
The collision had fatal consequences, with one individual rushed to a nearby hospital but later pronounced dead, as reported by state police. Another was transported with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to a hospital but had no injuries.
Following the accident, authorities closed the southbound lanes of I-55 as they addressed the chaotic scene. Traffic detoured at the Cicero exit, with continuing investigations by the Illinois State Police. Details remain scarce as the investigation persists, but the incident has again highlighted the dangers confronted by those stranded on Chicago's busy expressways.
