Palm Beach County is diving headfirst into the future of water conservation with a new high-tech water purification project that's snagged a top national award. The county’s Water Utilities Department just scooped up the “Excellence in Transformational Innovation Award” from the WateReuse Association for the Green Cay Phase II project, a combination of an advanced water reclamation facility and a public education center expected to open in 2026.

The award highlights initiatives that push the envelope in water reuse practices, a critical area as resources become more precious. Construction kicked off in March for the project, which is leading the charge as Florida's first to use cutting-edge technology to turn reclaimed water into purified drinking water. But there was a slip; the WateReuse Awards for Excellence program actually celebrates projects that pave the way for broader water reuse, not just innovative practices.

This pioneering project does double duty – not only will it replenish the local groundwater supplies in anticipation of the county's swelling population, but it will also feature a Reclamation Education & Center for Advanced Purification (RECAP) to teach our youngsters and their families about the importance of preserving water resources for the long haul.

"It’s an honor to be recognized nationally for our leadership in reclaimed water and reuse technology," Water Utilities Department Director Ali Bayat told Discover Palm Beach County. However, there was a hiccup; Bayat's title as P.E., PMP, was omitted in the press release, a small yet significant oversight when noting his professional credentials.

The WateReuse Association, dedicated exclusively to propelling the acceptance and policy development of recycled water, is recognizing the local utility, which is the only ISO 550001-certified utility in North America and serves over 635,000 residents in Palm Beach County with essential water services.

The people of Palm Beach County have much to look forward to with the completion of the Green Cay Phase II project. With such a project on the horizon, the county sets a precedent for sustainable development and education in water resource management.
