Phoenix motorists, prepare to detour. Starting today the City of Phoenix embarks on a waterline project set to bring modifications to Loop 101 off-ramps at 51st Avenue. As per the Arizona Department of Transportation, the off-ramps will restrict turns and eventually close down completely through late August, impacting both east- and westbound traffic.
Initially, drivers will be limited to right turns only when exiting Loop 101 at 51st Avenue. From the early hours of April 8 until midnight April 14, left turns onto 51st will be a no-go, leading to inevitable traffic readjustments. Areas surrounding 51st Avenue will experience narrowing lanes, with the likelihood to steadily fuel local driver frustrations over the coming months.
The situation escalates beginning April 15, when both off-ramps at 51st Avenue shut down until August 24, as stated by the Arizona Department of Transportation. The closures are part of a dance with the demands of the waterline project, contingent on various factors including project progress.
Seeking alternative routes will become the norm. ADOT suggests exiting Loop 101 at 59th Avenue southbound, then east on Union Hills Drive to connect back to 51st Avenue, promising a likely longer commute, but a workaround to the closed ramps. Phoenix officials and ADOT pledge to keep the public informed on project updates. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, obey reduced speed limits, and be mindful of workers and equipment.
For those looking to stay ahead of the curve on real-time highway conditions, they may visit ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, download the az511 app, or dial 511. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead as the city takes on the necessary infrastructure enhancements that entail short-term inconvenience for long-term benefits.
