Phoenix Freeways Open for Final Four Fans, ADOT Limits Closures to Ensure Smooth TravelSource: Facebook/Arizona Department of Transportation

Travelers hitting the Phoenix highways this weekend will see a break from the usual grind, as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) eases off on freeway closures to accommodate the influx of fans for the NCAA Final Four games. In a nod to the sports celebrations, downtown Phoenix and Glendale areas will remain closure-free, offering visitors and residents alike an uninterrupted path to the festivities.

ADOT isn't shutting down completely, though. There's still a sprinkle of restrictions in place for those attempting to navigate the Valley areas with roadwork scheduled for improvement projects. Notably, the westbound I-10 ramp to eastbound US 60 will be shut from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday, April 8, for bridge work on the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, and during the same time, the westbound I-10 on-ramp at Broadway Road will also be off-limits, as ADOT has announced.

The disruptions extend to the westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) ramp to southbound State Route 51, slated for an overnight closure from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday, April 6, as crews take on barrier wall repairs. Phoenix's 16th Street will also see closures in both directions beneath Loop 101 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, April 8 due to freeway wall construction. For details on detours and additional information, motorists are directed to consult i10BroadwayCurve.com

While schedules could potentially be derailed by inclement weather or surprise factors, most projects seeing through the weekend are funded in part by Proposition 400. This dedicated sales tax, given the green light by Maricopa County voters in 2004, fuels the construction of new freeways, additional lanes, and other improvements as part of the Regional Transportation Plan. For real-time updates on the go, ADOT recommends checking out their Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, downloading the az511 app, or dialing 511 for the latest highway conditions.
