In a harrowing encounter on the streets of Springfield, a plain-clothes detective narrowly escaped an armed carjacking attempt last Friday. According to Springfield Police Department reports, the officer was conducting an investigation when confronted by two armed individuals, who threatened him with a firearm. The quick-thinking detective managed to evade the attack by driving away and alerting backup officers.
The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Devin Abrew and 20-year-old Dannie Abrew, were promptly apprehended by the Firearms Investigation Unit under the direction of Sergeants Christopher Hitas and David Robillard. Despite being pointed at his head with a gun, the detective's decision to flee the scene led to the safe apprehension of the suspects, who were taken into custody moments later on Reed Street.
Seizing a loaded large-capacity firearm disposed of by the suspects during the chase, the police charged the Abrew brothers with multiple felonies, including carrying a firearm without a license and attempted armed carjacking. Held at the Hampden County Correctional Facility, they await a dangerousness hearing scheduled for April 4.
"Our Detective made a split-second decision with a gun pointed at his head and his instincts helped lead him to safety," commented the police department, praising the officers involved for their swift action. Pointing to a concerning trend of violence towards law enforcement, Mayor Sarno weighed in on the incident. With the recent arrests, he highlighted a desperate need for more stringent judicial consequences, stating, "What message will some of our judges and court system send? Will they keep them behind bars, or will they continue to embolden and empower them to commit more crimes against our residents/businesses and police officers?!" indicating that the pendulum needs to return to law and order.
With this latest incident, the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, led by Captain Brian Keenan, continues its effort to combat illegal weapons in the city. Their success is marked by the seizure of 27 illegal firearms so far in 2024. The community watches as the upcoming court decision on the dangerousness hearing may set the precedent for future cases involving threats to officers and citizens alike.
