The blaze known as the Congress Fire near Congress Avenue in Boca Raton, originally quelled by firefighters last Thursday, has proven to be a persistent adversary, igniting multiple times since its onset. Despite the efforts of firefighters from multiple departments, the fire has reignited yet again on Sunday, as reported by WPBF. This has led to intermittent closures along Congress Avenue, particularly impacting the strip near the 7400 block north of Clint Moore Road.
Having torched an area of roughly 35 acres, this brushfire's most recent rebirth occurred on Sunday, consuming an additional five acres. While BocaNewsNow.com reported that this sudden flare-up forced the closure of Congress Avenue again, threatening to snarl Monday's traffic, they also mentioned there are currently no evacuations in place. Firefighters from the Boca Raton Fire Rescue and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue have been relentless, employing drones to assess the most severe parts of the fire, which – given the gusty winds of the past few days – has presented a formidable challenge.
The reasons behind the fiery siege remain as elusive as the fire itself is reluctant to succumb. The State Fire Marshal's office is currently investigating the origins of this brushfire, which has yet to be determined, as BocaNewsNow.com has learned.
Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Smith of the Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services Department has offered reassurance to concerned locals, stating, "There are no threats to any homes, and we have a tremendous amount of dedicated resources here to make sure one, hopefully, it doesn’t rekindle, but if it does, we’re ready to get on top of it and limit it. But most of all, I would tell them, if you don’t need to be in the area right now while it’s smoky, don’t come to the area and for people who have respiratory conditions, if you don’t need to be outside, stay inside and stay out of the smoke as much as you can." It was in an interview with WPBF that Smith assured the public that they had the situation in hand.
As part of their strategy, crews are conducting controlled burns to use up potential fuel for the fire, reducing the risk of its further spread. Despite the challenges, the fire was reported to be 100 percent contained after the rekindling on Sunday afternoon. With Congress Avenue now open and the Boca Raton Fire Rescue having cleared the scene, authorities remain on high alert to ensure the safety and well-being of the Boca Raton community.
