A 31-year-old Riviera Beach man is facing felony charges after a standoff with police. Marqiese Reid, identified by authorities, has been charged with aggravated battery and assault on a person 65 years of age or older, according to CBS12. The situation escalated on Friday, March 29, prompting the deployment of a SWAT team to the 100 block of 35th Street where the suspect had holed himself up.
Law enforcement was quick to secure and surround the area, with the Riviera Beach Police Department (RBPD) confirming the victim was not present in the home during the barricade. In a statement obtained by WPTV, spokeswoman Serena Spates said, "It is important to note that the victim was not inside the residence during the incident," reassuring that the focus was to safely apprehend the suspect Reid, who was ultimately arrested without other occupants involved.
Reid, who allegedly assaulted the elderly woman prior to the standoff, refused to make his first court appearance on Sunday. A subsequent appearance has been scheduled for Monday morning. Details surrounding the altercation with the elderly victim and the motive behind the incident remain unclear.
The suspect was taken into custody at 8:40 p.m. on the day of the incident and booked into the Palm Beach County Jail several hours later, as per records.
